| The J. Paul Getty Museum's GettyGuide (tm) is a kiosk and handheld-based system intended to provide museum visitors with a variety of information. The museum asked Triplecode to assist with the redesign of several aspects of this significant project.
Timeline
In order to give visitors an overview of the museum's collection, Triplecode created a dynamic, Flash-based, Timeline. The Timeline illustrates the significant art movements and periods represented in the Getty's collection, highlights individual objects that are popular with visitors, and includes historic events to help provide context. It makes exploring art fun and easy for non-expert visitors. User feedback has singled this out as among the most enjoyable parts of the kiosk.
Find Art
GettyGuide's Find Art component allows visitors to search for art in the
museum's collection. After testing revealed significant user confusion with
the previous "find system," the Getty asked Triplecode to redesign it. The
resulting interface simplifies and makes visible the search process using
simple filters and and clear navigation. Now visitors can easily find what
they're looking for - even if they are unsure of the artwork's title or
artist.
Home Screen
As a visitor's first exposure to GettyGuide, the design of its home screen
is particularly important. Triplecode created a layout with easy-to-update
elements, and a clear hierarchy with the most commonly used features
prominently displayed. It makes the kiosk inviting from the moment a visitor
first starts using it.
Handheld, Attract Loop, and ongoing efforts
We have assisted with a variety of other design and interface tasks and
consulting on GettyGuide. And we are continuing to work with the Getty as
GettyGuide continues development and refinement.
